5 killed in fire at Keraniganj lighter factory

A fire broke out at a tin-shed gas lighter manufacturing factory at the Kadamtali intersection in Keraniganj this afternoon, leaving at least five people dead, officials said.

So far, five bodies have been recovered, but it was not immediately possible to determine whether the victims were male or female, said Anwarul Islam, an officer at the media wing of the Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence.

Search operations were still ongoing as of the latest update.

The Fire Service control room received information about the blaze at 1:11pm, and the first units reached the spot at 1:16pm.

Seven firefighting units worked to bring the fire under control, which was achieved at around 2:30pm.

Further details about the cause of the fire and possible casualties were not immediately available.
