Bangladesh emerged champions of SAAF U-20 Championship after defeating India 4-3 in a dramatic penalty shootout, following a goalless draw in regulation time in Malé on Friday.

Neither side managed to break the deadlock in 90 minutes, forcing the match into a tiebreaker where Bangladesh held their nerve to secure the title.

Bangladesh dominated much of the first half, while India came back stronger after the break with increased attacking pressure.

However, despite enjoying more possession and creating chances, India struggled to seriously test Bangladesh’s defense or goalkeeper Mahin.

Bangladesh, on the other hand, looked dangerous on the counter and created several opportunities of their own.

Forward Ronan Sullivan remained tightly marked by Indian defenders but still managed to take a few shots.

In the second half, Declan Sullivan was introduced and added pace to the attack, creating chances from the flanks.

In one notable moment, he delivered a precise long ball to his brother Ronan, whose shot was denied by the advancing Indian goalkeeper.

Both teams had multiple chances but failed to convert, with Bangladesh also coming close on several occasions inside the box.

Goalkeeper Mahin made crucial interventions, despite a couple of minor handling errors that did not lead to danger.

The match, held in the Maldivian capital, drew strong support from Bangladeshi expatriates, who filled the stands to cheer for their team. Having faced each other earlier in the group stage, both sides were well aware of each other’s strengths.

Ultimately, Bangladesh’s composure in the shootout proved decisive, sealing a memorable victory over their regional rivals.
