A writ petition has been filed with the High Court seeking directives to keep schools closed until the ongoing measles outbreak is brought under control.
Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Purnima Jahan submitted the petition to the relevant branch of the High Court on Thursday.
The petition also calls for the formation of a high-level investigation committee into the recent deaths of 47 children caused by measles in the country. A hearing on the matter may take place today before a High Court bench.
Additionally, the petition requests the issuance of a rule asking the respondents to explain why their inaction and failure to prevent and control the measles outbreak should not be declared illegal, arbitrary, and without lawful authority.
The writ further states that failure to ensure timely vaccination, maintain vaccine availability, and provide adequate healthcare services and emergency response constitutes a clear violation of constitutional rights.
It also seeks immediate directives for launching a nationwide emergency measles vaccination campaign, ensuring the supply of vaccines, syringes, and necessary logistics, and establishing effective emergency response systems, including sufficient medical facilities, specialized units, and ICU support across the country.
