A bus fell into the Padma river at Daulatdia ferry ghat in Rajbari’s Goalanda upazila this afternoon, raising fears of multiple casualties.

“At Daulatdia ghat in Rajbari, a bus fell into the Padma while boarding a ferry. Fire Service diving teams are working to rescue the passengers who were inside. Additional diving teams are being sent from the Dhaka headquarters,” the Fire Service Media Wing said.

Mohammad Monjur Morshed, superintendent of police in Rajbari, said they were aware of the incident but had not yet received any reports of casualties.

The incident occurred around 5:30pm at pontoon number 3, when a bus of Showhardo Paribahan reportedly lost control and fell into the river while boarding the ferry, witnesses said.

Several passengers managed to swim ashore after the incident, but many others are feared to have gone under, according to locals.

Local residents also gathered at the ghat and initiated initial rescue efforts.

The exact number of passengers on board could not be immediately confirmed.
