An official of the Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) was shot and injured by suspected drug dealers during an anti-drug drive in Dhaka’s Sayedabad area today.
The injured officer, Siddiqur Rahman, 40, serves as an inspector of the DNC’s Khilgaon Zone. He is currently undergoing treatment at the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
The incident took place around 12:00pm on the railway tracks behind the Sayedabad Bus Terminal.
Md Raziur Rahman, deputy director of DNC Dhaka Metropolitan (South), said seven units under the southern division conducted a coordinated anti-narcotics drive in different parts of the capital this morning. After completing a drive in the Dayaganj area, the team moved to Sayedabad.
The team identified several suspected drug dealers near the railway tracks behind the bus terminal. As Inspector Siddiqur attempted to apprehend one of them, the suspect allegedly pulled out a pistol and fired several shots.
One of the bullets hit Siddiqur’s left leg, causing him to collapse on the spot. He was immediately rushed to DMCH by his colleagues.
The alleged shooter has been identified as Masum, he added.
