4 arrested over Narsingdi teen’s abduction and killing

Police have arrested four people after a case had been filed in Narsingdi’s Madhabdi over the abduction and killing of a teenage girl, allegedly to suppress a gang rape incident.

“A case was filed with Madhabdi Police Station last night by the victim’s mother, Fahima Begum, accusing eight individuals of abducting her daughter and killing her in a cropland to cover up a gang rape incident,” said Madhabdi Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Kamal Hossain.

Nurul Islam has been named prime accused.

“Four have so far been arrested. Efforts were underway to arrest the remaining accused involved in the incident,” he added.

The four arrestees are former ward member of Mahishashur union Ahmad Ali Dewan, 65; his son Imran Dewan, 25; prime accused Nurul’s cousin Mohammad Ayub, 36; and Ebaidullah, 38.

The victim, a garment factory worker, lived with her parents in a rented house in the Darikandi area and was a resident of Bilpar.

The victim’s father, Ashraf Hossain, alleged that around 15 days ago a group of six youths led by Nurul abducted and raped the girl.

He told that the family attempted to file a case but were threatened with death if they proceeded.

“They even intercepted us on our way to the police station. Being intimidated, we returned home,” he said.

Ashraf said they later informed Ahmed Ali, a member of ward 9 of Mahishashur union, who settled the matter through a social arbitration.

Ahmad Ali, then acting as arbitrator, allegedly struck a deal with the perpetrators, pocketing a large sum of money, the victim's father alleged. The family was reportedly pressured to leave the village.

“But Nurul kept stalking my daughter. Feeling insecure, we decided to send her to a safer place,” Ashraf said.

On February 25, while Ashraf was taking his daughter a relative’s house, Nurul and his associates abducted her from Boroitola area, the case statement says.

Failing to find her despite searching, he said he informed Ahmed Ali.

“We found my daughter’s body on Thursday morning in a mustard field,” he said.

“They killed my daughter after raping her again. I want justice.”

Ahmed Ali denied mediating any arbitration and said he was not home when the family came to see him that night.

Farida Gulshana Kabir, resident medical officer of Narsingdi Sadar Hospital, said the body has been received and an autopsy will be conducted on Friday (today).

Narsingdi Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Sujon Chandra Sarker said the body was recovered with a scarf wrapped around her neck.

“Details will be known after the autopsy,” he added.
