The annual Dol Purnima observance at the shrine of Bengali mystic poet and spiritual philosopher Lalon Shah, widely known as Lalon Fakir or Shahji, begins today (March 2) at Chheuriya Akhrabari in Kushtia, drawing Baul singers, devotees and spiritual seekers despite a scaled-down schedule shaped by Ramadan.
Traditionally a three-day gathering marked by music, discussion and a vibrant rural fair, this year’s festival has been shortened to two days. Cultural performances and the customary fair have been suspended. Organisers said the observance will instead focus on spiritual discussions, ritual practices and hospitality for visiting Bauls.
Acting caretaker Mashiur Rahman said the arrangements are being conducted with support from the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and the district administration. Formal proceedings will conclude at noon on Tuesday (March 3).
Even before the official opening, devotees had begun arriving at the Akhrabari several days in advance. Groups gathered across the shrine compound on Saturday afternoon, singing Lalon songs and exchanging philosophical reflections — a familiar prelude to the annual event.
Many participants arrived early despite expectations of smaller crowds during Ramadan. According to organisers, rituals will begin today evening with Gurukarya, followed by the Rakhial service and midnight Adhibash. Balya service will take place at dawn tomorrow, ending with the Purna service at noon.
Security measures have been strengthened around the shrine. Upazila Nirbahi Officer Farzana Akhtar told the media that CCTV surveillance has been installed, while police, Ansar personnel, village police and volunteer teams will remain on duty. Medical staff have also been arranged to assist visiting devotees.
