BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s health condition is extremely critical and she is going through a critical time at the ICU of Evercare Hospital, said her personal physician Dr AZM Zahid Hossain on Sunday.

Since Khaleda’s admission to a cabin at the hospital on 23 November, her condition has gradually worsened significantly and she has been shifted to the ICU from the CCU, Dr Zahid added at a surprise press briefing called in front of the Evercare Hospital around 12:30am.

“Naturally it cannot be said that her physical condition has improved. By the grace of the Almighty, if she can overcome this crisis, then something good will happen,” said Dr Zahid, also BNP’s Standing Committee member.

During the briefing, Khaleda’s son and BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman as well as his wife Zubaida Rahman were inside the hospital to inquire about the party chief.

Tarique has urged the countrymen to pray for his mother’s swift recovery, Dr Zahid told reporters.

Tarique has also called on BNP activists to avoid unnecessarily congesting the hospital area, or join activities out of “excessive enthusiasm,” Dr Zahid said. The acting chairman has requested all to exercise caution and avoid disrupting the treatment of Khaleda and other patients at the hospital, Dr Zahid added.

Tarique has expressed his gratitude to the medical board overseeing Khaleda’s treatment, Dr Zahid noted.

Tarique and Zubaida reached Evercare Hospital around 9:40pm on Saturday, and held talks with the medical board. More than two hours later the couple left the hospital.

On 23 November, Khaleda Zia was admitted to a cabin at the hospital. Afterwards, officials shifted her to CCU and then to ICU.
