The 300 Feet area of the capital turned into a ‘sea of people’ on Thursday morning as BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman returned home after nearly 17 years in exile.
To mark his long-awaited return and make the occasion memorable, the BNP organised a grand reception at the venue. Despite severe cold, thousands of party leaders and activists from across the country began gathering early in the morning.
From Kuril onwards, a continuous stream of supporters was seen moving towards the stage area. A festive atmosphere prevailed, with visible excitement among leaders and activists. The slogan “Leader is coming” echoed repeatedly across the venue.
The entire area resembled a large festival ground, decorated with placards, banners and slogans. Hawkers lined the roads selling food and drinking water, while trucks equipped with loudspeakers played party and patriotic songs. Law enforcement agencies maintained a tight security blanket across the venue and surrounding areas.
BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman's reception program is expected to attract 5 million people, said Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, the party's senior joint secretary general and member secretary of the reception committee.
He said, “Tarique Rahman will come today, December 25. We are sure that this area will become a great gathering and grand fair for people.”
Tarique Rahman is returning home after almost a decade and a half. The plane carrying him left for Dhaka from London's Heathrow Airport on Wednesday evening local time. His flight is scheduled to arrive at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka around 12:15 pm on Thursday.
