A woman died under suspicious circumstances at a residence in Zaltbommel overnight from Monday to Tuesday, with police continuing a large-scale investigation nearly twelve hours after the incident.

Emergency services, including fire service and an ambulance, were dispatched to a house on Wichard van Pontlaan at around 1:15 a.m. following a report of a resuscitation attempt. However, the effort was deemed ineffective at the scene, authorities said.

Police later confirmed that a 42-year-old man, identified as Mahabub Alam (Kallol), was arrested in connection with the death of his partner, 33-year-old Ismat Ara Chowdhury. A police spokesperson said the man is suspected of involvement in her death. They told it a domestic violence. No further details have been released at this stage.

As part of the investigation, a section of Wichard van Pontlaan has been cordoned off. A mobile police unit has been stationed in front of the residence, while several police vehicles remain parked along the street.

Forensic investigators have erected a tent against the facade of the house, and screens have been installed to shield the scene from public view as evidence is collected. Police said the investigation is ongoing and that more information will be shared as it becomes available.

The house where Ismat Ara Chowdhury was found dead was owner-occupied and had been inhabited by the same family since it was built eight years ago. The property is owned by Ismat and her husband, Mahabub Alam (Kallol), a couple originally from Bangladesh. They have two children, Ayat and Ajan.

Law enforcement authorities said it remains unclear whether anyone else was present in the house at the time of the incident on Monday night, apart from the victim and the man who has since been arrested in connection with the case.
Family members of the deceased living in Bangladesh said they were informed of her death by local authorities over the phone. According to the family, officials told them that one person has been arrested, an autopsy has already been conducted, and the couple’s two children Ayat and Ajan are currently in safe custody.

The authorities also informed the family that the investigation is ongoing and that it may take one to two weeks to determine the exact cause of death and establish the circumstances leading to the incident.

Meanwhile, Ismat’s mother Nagina Hossain Chowdhury has alleged a history of domestic violence in the marriage. She claimed that her daughter had been physically abused by her husband on several occasions in the past. According to her, Ismat was planning to divorce Kallol and return to Bangladesh after completing her studies.

“I want justice for my daughter’s killing. I expect the highest punishment for those responsible,” she said. Kallol was a resident of Basabo, Dhaka, Bangladesh, she added.

Police have not confirmed the allegations and said no conclusions should be drawn while the investigation remains underway.
