A businessman was shot dead by an armed assailant in Old Dhaka's Shyambazar area this afternoon.

The deceased, Abdur Rahman, 55, was the former president of the Shyambazar Kachabazar Traders' Association.

The shooting took place around noon in front of Maula Buksh Sarder Eye Hospital in Shyambazar.

Critically injured, Rahman was rushed to the emergency department of Sir Salimullah Medical College and Mitford Hospital by pedestrians, where doctors declared him dead around 1:30pm, said Motiur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Sutrapur Police Station.

"According to locals, a youth named Nayan shot him and fled the scene," the OC said, adding that police have yet to determine further details.

Teams have been sent to the spot and the hospital to gather more information and identify the motive behind the killing.

Police are working to arrest the shooter.

Earlier on November 10, top-listed criminal Tarik Saif Mamun, 55, was shot dead in broad daylight near Dhaka National Medical College Hospital in Sutrapur.
