Hypertension ranks first among Bangladesh’s top ten diseases

The Health and Morbidity Status Survey (HMSS) 2025 has revealed that 332 out of every 1,000 people (3 in 10 or 33%) experienced some form of illness in the 90 days leading up to the survey in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics carried out the survey on 1,89,986 people and 47,040 households between November and December last year and revealed the data at an event at BBS today.

According to the report, hypertension led the top ten diseases. The other nine top diseases are peptic ulcer, diabetes, arthritis, skin diseases, heart disease, asthma, osteoporosis, hepatitis, and diarrhea.

In the three months preceding the survey, the average per-person medical expenditure was Tk 2,487. For women, the average cost was Tk 2,576, while it was Tk 2,387 for men. Women were also found to rely more on government health services compared to men.

According to the survey, 26.7% of people aged 15 and above use some form of tobacco or tobacco products. There is a noticeable rural-urban difference: rural areas report a higher usage rate (27.7%) compared to urban areas (24.1%).
