BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has blamed the interim government for the ongoing crisis in the country. He made the remarks on Friday (October 31) while speaking at a discussion organized by the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD–ASM Rob) at the National Press Club auditorium in Dhaka.
Mirza Fakhrul said, “The crisis that has emerged today has, in fact, been created by the current interim government and its so-called reform commission. Over nearly a year of discussions on various issues of consensus, we agreed on several points but could not reach agreement on a few others. Despite our differences, we signed the main charter.”
The BNP secretary general asserted that the BNP has always been a party of reform. “BNP was born through reform. The party’s founder, Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, established it in 1979 to replace one-party rule with a multi-party democratic system. At that time, all newspapers were shut down, but he reopened them and restored the people’s fundamental rights.”
Referring to former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia’s leadership, he added, “Although we initially opposed the move, it was Begum Zia who transitioned the country from a presidential to a parliamentary system. Through democratic elections, she introduced the caretaker government system into the constitution, under which four credible national elections were held.”
Mirza Fakhrul further said, “Those who claim that BNP does not want reform are misleading the nation. BNP has always advocated reform. We have presented 10-point, 27-point, and 31-point reform proposals. We attended every dialogue to achieve consensus and eventually signed the charter of agreement. If there is any confusion now, it has come from those responsible for the consensus commission, not from us.”
