Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) student Sreeshant Roy was arrested on Wednesday after a case was filed against him under the Cyber Security Ordinance.
Investigation Officer Sub-Inspector Md Shahjahan Siraj confirmed the matter.
Sreeshant Roy was sued and arrested following the student protest over the allegations of rape and sexual harassment against him, said Sub-inspector Abdur Razzak, the duty officer of Chawkbazar Police Station.
Following the protest, Prof Dr AKM Masud, director of the Directorate of Students' Welfare, issued a written notice suspending the accused student from BUET.
The action came after students took to the streets late last night, demanding punishment for the accused.
The BUET campus turned tense as general students gathered in front of the Directorate of Students' Welfare (DSW) building near the central playground early today. Students alleged that the accused made vulgar, derogatory, and sexually harassing remarks about women on the social media platform Reddit under an anonymous account. They also claimed that he admitted to committing rape in one of his posts.
