‘Suspected foreign agent’ sent to jail

A Dhaka court has sent to jail Enayet Karim Chowdhury, a Bangladeshi-origin US citizen, to jail on suspicions that he is involved in a foreign government plot to overthrow the Prof Yunus-led administration.

The court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Dilruba Afroza Tithi confirmed the jail order on Sunday. A remand hearing will be held on Monday.

On Saturday morning, police detained Enayet, 55, from the capital’s Minto Road area, and produced him before the court shortly afterwards.

He has not been named in any case so far, and was produced before the court under Section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, which grants police special powers to detain suspected individuals.

Ramna Model Police Station Sub-Inspector Azizul Islam told the court that two iPhones of Enayet and his personal statement imply he has been working for a foreign secret agent to overthrow the interim government and replace it with a new transitional government or a “National Government.”
