A Bangladeshi man was injured in firing by Indian Border Security Force (BSF) on Azmatpur border in Chapainawabganj's Shibganj upazila early today.
The injured, Shahidul Islam, 25, of Bagichapara of the upazila, was part of a group of six alleged smugglers returning to Bangladesh from India with a consignment of Phensidyl, said Lt Col Golam Kibria, commander of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) 59th Battalion.
The incident occurred around 2:00am when the group was approximately 130 yards inside Indian territory, he said.
BSF personnel from a nearby camp opened fire, injuring Shahidul, the BGB official said.
His companions managed to rescue him and flee back to Bangladesh, Lt Col Kibria added.
Shahidul was later admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for treatment.
