A Rohingya youth named Md. Saber (20) was arrested on Thursday morning (January 9) from the Patiya Upazila Election Office. He had gone to the office to inquire about unblocking his uncle Anwar Kamal's blocked National Identity Card (NID).
Investigations revealed that Saber had arrived at the Ukhiya Balukhali camp in Cox's Bazar in 2017 and had been studying at a madrasa in Patiya after obtaining an NID using a fake name and address. His uncle, Anwar Kamal, was identified as a Rohingya in 2018 and his NID was subsequently blocked.
Md. Arifur Islam, the Upazila Election Officer of Patiya, said that Saber was arrested after his identity was verified and found to be suspicious. The police were informed and subsequently apprehended him.
Abu Zayed Md. Nazmun Noor, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Patiya Police Station, stated that a case has been initiated regarding this incident.
