BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has said any constitutional amendment must take place within the framework of the parliament, rejecting the possibility of making such changes outside democratic institutions.
Speaking at a memorial event in Dhaka on Saturday (2 August), Amir Khasru stated, “If there is any need to amend the Constitution, it must be done within parliament. Every party must seek a mandate from the people to make such changes.”
The BNP leader was addressing a discussion held at the ICMAB auditorium in Nilkhet to mark the fifth death anniversary of former BNP Vice Chairman Abdul Mannan. The event was organized by the Mannan-Nilufer Memorial Foundation.
“There is no opportunity to bring changes to the Constitution outside the parliamentary process,” he said. “Transparency and democratic processes are essential if we want meaningful reform.”
Criticizing efforts to disrupt the electoral process, he said, “Those trying to obstruct elections do not believe in democracy or the parliamentary system. In fact, they don’t even know which system they want.”
Emphasizing the need for a shift in political culture, Amir Khasru noted, “No reform will be effective if we fail to change our political mindset. We must learn to respect differing opinions and practice tolerance. National unity must prevail where the country’s interest demands it.”
He also rejected speculations about a breakdown in opposition unity following the events of 5 August. “I don’t see any disunity. Each political party will naturally have its own philosophy and strategy. Where we agree, we will work together. Where we differ, we will take the matter to the people,” he said.
Other BNP leaders present included Central Organizing Secretary Shama Obayed, Assistant Organizing Secretary Selimuzzaman Selim, and Dhaka District BNP President Khandaker Abu Ashfaq.
The event also featured remarks from Northern University Associate Professor Md Jasim Uddin and BNP’s International Affairs Secretary Barrister Nasir Uddin Ahmed Asim. The memorial was chaired by Barrister Mehnaz Mannan, founder of the Mannan-Nilufer Memorial Foundation.
