Four people were killed when an accident occurred on the Dhaka-Aricha Highway in Rajfulbaria, Savar, early Thursday, as a collision between three vehicles, including an ambulance and two buses, led to a fire.
The incident took place around 2am when a passenger bus rear-ended an ambulance, causing it to ignite.
The fire quickly spread to the bus that caused the crash and another passenger bus of Shyamoli Paribahan, according to Fire Service Control Room Duty Officer Rakibul Hasan.
Two units of the fire service rushed to the scene and brought the blaze under control by 3:30am, preventing further casualties.
However, while bus passengers managed to evacuate, the ambulance occupants were unable to escape.
The cause of the fire remains undetermined as an investigation is ongoing.
Savar Highway Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sawgatul Islam said the deceased have been sent for autopsy, and efforts are being made to identify them.
"The vehicles involved in the collision are being removed from the highway to restore traffic flow. Preliminary findings suggest that the fire broke out following the collision," OC Sawgatul added.
