At least five people were killed and multiple others injured when a train hit a microbus in Faridpur this afternoon, causing it to plunge into a pond.

The identities of the deceased could not be confirmed immediately, said Asaduzzaman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Faridpur's Kotwali Police Station, adding the death toll may rise.

The accident occurred around 12:30pm at Munshibazar area in Faridpur Sadar. Upon receiving information, three fire engines from Faridpur Fire Station rushed to the scene and began rescue operations, said Nazrul Islam, senior station officer of the Faridpur Fire Station.

The fire department official said the microbus was crossing a level crossing when it was struck by the train, causing the vehicle, which had passengers onboard, to fall into a nearby waterbody.

"We reached the spot at 12:28pm after receiving information and recovered three dead bodies. The microbus has been recovered, but no bodies were found trapped inside or underneath it," he added.

Faridpur Medical College Ward Master Atiar Rahman confirmed that two of those brought to the hospital for treatment were brought dead.

"The rest have been admitted to the hospital, the microbus driver is among them as well," he said.

There is no authorised rail crossing of the rail division in Gerda, Faridupur, confirmed Taqdir Hossain, station master at the Faridpur Railway Station.
