Student and teachers of Jagannath University who have demonstrating since Wednesday with a 4-point demand called off their protest tonight after assurances from University Grants Commission Chairman Prof SMA Faiz that the government has accepted their demands.
Prof Rais Uddin, general secretary of JnU Teachers' Association, made the announcement at the Kakrail intersection in the capital around 8:30pm.
He said all the activities of the university will resume from tomorrow.
Earlier, the UGC chairman went to the spot around 7:00pm and announced that the government has accepted their demands.
The move came hours after students of JnU began a mass hunger strike from 3:30pm to press home their four-point demands. The UGC chairman is briefing protesting students at the spot.
Prof Faiz said they worked tirelessly throughout the day to address the students' concerns.
"Our only aim was to ensure that our students are not left out on the streets," he said. "I can assure you that the UGC and university authorities will move forward as a family."
Expressing optimism, he added, "If we stay united, we will be able to resolve all the ongoing issues. If we cannot solve the crisis by ourselves, no one else will be able to do it."
He said they worked in coordination with the chief adviser, education adviser, finance adviser and others to reach a resolution.
Later, the UGC chairman, along with the Jagannath University vice-chancellor, ended the students' hunger strike by offering them water.
