Police baton-charged and fired tear gas shells at Jagannath University (JnU) students during their "Long March to Jamuna" programme in Dhaka's Kakrail today, leaving several students and teachers injured.

The incident occurred around 12:30pm when police intercepted the procession near Kakrail intersection, according to a photojournalist present at the scene.

A heated altercation between the demonstrators and police soon intensified into scuffles, prompting law enforcers to disperse the students using force," he said.

At least 25 students were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) after suffering injuries from baton charges or falling ill due to tear gas inhalation, according to hospital sources.

Marching under the banner of "JnU Oikya", the students broke through police barricades and took position on the road.

Earlier in the day, students gathered at the university's Shaheed Minar, suspending classes and exams to press home their three-point demand. The procession crossed Ray Saheb Bazar intersection by 11:55am., according to our correspondent at the scene.

The students' demands include increased budget allocation for Jagannath University, introduction of a housing allowance, and improvement of academic facilities.
