Two Bangladeshi farmers were allegedly detained by Indian Border Security Force (BSF) on Friday afternoon along the Biral border in Dinajpur, according to local sources.
In retaliation, Bangladeshi locals detained two Indian nationals.
As of 2:15 PM, a flag meeting between Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and BSF was ongoing to resolve the situation.
According to locals, the two farmers, Masud and Enamul, were harvesting paddy near the border when BSF personnel reportedly crossed into Bangladeshi territory and detained them from Dharampur union in Biral upazila.
Upon learning of the incident, local Bangladeshis retaliated by detaining two Indian farmers, Abinash Tudu and Philip Soren, both residents of Anantapur village in Gangarampur police station area of Dakshin Dinajpur district, West Bengal.
Rezaul Karim, commander of Dharamjoyn BOP under BGB’s 42 Battalion, confirmed that talks were underway between BGB and BSF to arrange for the release of two detained Bangladeshis and the handover of two detained Indians.
Locals also noted that this was not the first such incident in the area.
Similar exchanges have occurred in the past, with BSF detaining Bangladeshi farmers, prompting locals to detain Indian nationals in retaliation.
