Bangladesh's premier medical education institution officially renamed from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) to 'Bangladesh Medical University' through a constitutional amendment.
On Wednesday, April 16, it was confirmed through a notification signed by university registrar Professor Dr. Md. Nazrul Islam.
"Words 'Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib' as mentioned in Act No. 1 of 1998 have been replaced with word 'Bangladesh'," reads notification, emphasising institution shall now be officially recognised as Bangladesh Medical University.
Amendment modifies original Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Act established in 1998, marking significant institutional rebranding for country's top medical teaching facility located at capital's Shahbagh.
Ordinance No. 12, 2025 was approved under the presidential power granted by Article 93(1) of the Constitution of Bangladesh.
It was published on April 13 by the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.
According to the ordinance, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Act, 1998 has been amended to replace the words “Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib” with “Bangladesh” in Act No. 1 of 1998.
University administration confirmed immediate implementation of name change across all official communications, signage and documentation following presidential ordinance.
