Garment workers blocked several major roads in Mirpur, Dhaka, on Saturday, causing severe traffic congestion in Mirpur-10 and surrounding areas.
The workers began their protest around 11:00am, blocking roads and demanding, among other things, that the minimum monthly wage be raised to Tk30,000.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of Mirpur Division Zahidul Islam said garment workers had blocked the roads and police were present at the scene to bring the situation under control.
In a Facebook post, the Traffic-Mirpur Division said vehicular movement had been disrupted in several areas due to the workers’ protest. Police personnel were working to restore normal traffic movement.
The traffic division urged drivers and passengers using the affected roads to allow extra time for their journeys and exercise caution while travelling through the areas.
Earlier on Thursday, garment workers also blocked roads around Mirpur Gol Chattar and several other areas as part of their protest.
