File PhotoThe Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court on Monday (October 26) rejected the bail application of former MP and freedom fighter Major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman in a case over obstructing public duties and assaulting a security official at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
This marks the second time his bail plea has been turned down by the court, following a previous rejection on October 4 after the completion of his one-day police remand.
Detective Branch (DB) police arrested Major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman on October 2 following an incident at the airport involving a shortage of luggage trolleys, alleged chaos, and the physical assault of an on-duty airport security officer. The case was filed with Airport Police Station by airport security official Md. Shahriar Alam Sojib.
According to the First Information Report (FIR), a delegation of 34 Jamaat-e-Islami leaders and their family members landed at Dhaka airport from Medina at 8:55 AM on October 1. A temporary shortage of trolleys at baggage belt No. 8 created long queues, leading to arguments over delayed luggage and non-receipt of Zamzam water.
The FIR alleges that several protocol assistants attempted to bypass queuing rules to collect trolleys, which led to a confrontation.
The case against Major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman includes charges under multiple sections of the Penal Code for obstructing government servants in the discharge of public functions, assault, and intimidation. He remains in judicial custody.
