Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has ordered the immediate suspension of a doctor at Bangladesh Shishu Hospital and Institute in Agargaon, Dhaka, after finding him smoking inside his room during a surprise inspection today (17 October).
The prime minister visited the hospital around noon to inspect its various departments, the working environment of doctors and healthcare workers, and overall cleanliness.
During the inspection, he entered the room of Associate Professor Md Rafiqul Islam and found him smoking. The room was also untidy.
Expressing dissatisfaction with the doctor's conduct and the condition of his room, the prime minister criticised the behaviour as inappropriate in a healthcare institution.
He then instructed Professor Dr AKM Azizul Haque, chairman of the hospital's Board of Directors, to take action against the doctor. Following the directive, Rafiqul Islam was temporarily suspended.
During the visit, the prime minister also stressed the need to maintain a healthy environment, ensure cleanliness and uphold professional responsibility among doctors and other hospital staff.
