State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salauddin Tuku on Tuesday said the country’s development and improvement in people’s quality of life would be ensured under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
On October 8, he made the remarks at an awareness meeting and VGF rice distribution programme for fishing families at Charjanajat Elias Ahmed Chowdhury High School in Shibchar, organised on the occasion of the Mother Hilsa Protection Campaign-2026.
The state minister said Hilsa is a national asset and a GI product of Bangladesh, and called for strict enforcement of the 22-day ban on catching, transporting, marketing and selling Hilsa from October 8 to October 29.
He urged fishermen to consider the ban as an investment in increasing Hilsa production and improving their future livelihoods.
Tuku also assured the fishing community of continued government support during the ban period through the VGF programme.
Madaripur Deputy Commissioner Morjina Akter chaired the programme, while Madaripur-1 MP Sayeed Uddin Ahmad Hanjala and senior officials of the fisheries department and law enforcement agencies attended.
Later, the state minister distributed 25kg of VGF rice to each of 151 fishing families in the area.
