The ‘Special Response Battalion (SRB) Bill, 2026’ has been passed by Parliament in an amended form, paving the way for the dissolution of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed moved the bill for passage in its amended form during Thursday’s (September 10) session of Parliament. Following a discussion, the bill was passed.
Officials concerned said the new law will create an effective framework to enhance the capabilities of law enforcement agencies, ensure necessary training and maintain transparency in their activities.
Home Minister said a new Special Response Battalion (SRB) is being formed following the dissolution of RAB, stressing that there is no connection between RAB and the SRB.
He said state assets used by RAB would be transferred to the new organisation after its dissolution to prevent wastage of public resources.
The minister made the remarks while taking part in a discussion on the ‘Special Response Battalion (SRB) Bill, 2026’ during the third session of the 13th Parliament on Thursday afternoon. Deputy Speaker Barrister Kaisar Kamal presided over the session.
Salahuddin said the decision to dissolve RAB is part of the government’s election manifesto and the commitments made during the 2024 mass uprising. He said RAB is also being dissolved in response to demands from various quarters.
