Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed relevant authorities to take stricter measures to curb the uncontrolled use of polythene and plastic and reduce environmental pollution.
He also instructed ministries, departments and agencies concerned to properly carry out their responsibilities in this regard.
The prime minister issued the directives on Wednesday during a review meeting on environmental pollution control at the Secretariat.
The meeting discussed increasing the use of environmentally friendly block bricks and measures to control air, water, soil and noise pollution.
Officials also reviewed progress on various government initiatives to control pollution, waste management and future plans.
Ministers Shaikh Rabiul Alam (Road Transport and Bridges; Railways; and Shipping), State Minister Mir Shahe Alam (Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives), State Minister Farhad Hossain Azad (Water Resources), and State Minister Sheikh Faridul Islam (Environment, Forest and Climate Change) attended the meeting.
Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Goni, Prime Minister's Principal Secretary ABM Abdus Sattar, Dhaka South City Corporation Administrator Md Abdus Salam, and Prime Minister's Special Assistant for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Affairs Dr Saimum Parvez also attended, along with senior officials from relevant ministries, departments and agencies.
