Collected PhotoThe 11-party alliance led by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami began a long march from Dhaka to Chattogram on Saturday to press home its six-point demands.
The march started from Shapla Chattar in Motijheel in the morning following an inaugural rally held there at 7:00 am.
The programme began with a recitation from the Holy Qur’an. Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Assistant Secretary General and coordinator of the 11-party alliance Dr AHM Hamidur Rahman Azad delivered the opening address.
Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman addressed the rally as the chief guest. National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam and other senior leaders of the 11-party alliance also spoke.
The opposition alliance's demands include implementation of the referendum verdict, trial of those responsible for the July killings, an end to the crises involving electricity, fuel, gas and fertiliser, curbing the rising prices of essential commodities, stopping extortion and corruption, improving the law and order situation, and ending narrow partisan practices.
The alliance will hold roadside rallies at several pre-scheduled points along the route.
The first rally is scheduled near the truck stand at Kanchpur Bridge in Narayanganj, followed by programmes at Padua Bazar Bishwaroad in Cumilla, Mohipal in Feni and Mirsarai.
The long march will conclude with a public rally at Laldighi Maidan in Chattogram.
