Armed police battalion logo. Photo: CollectedThe government has approved the draft Armed Police Battalions Act, 2026, paving the way for members of the Armed Police Battalion (APBn) to investigate criminal offences and conduct related proceedings under the law.
The draft also proposes provisions for special and summary courts to deal with matters concerning the force.
The Cabinet approved the draft at its 18th meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at the Secretariat today (24 August), according to a press release from the Cabinet Division.
The approval was given subject to vetting by the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division.
The proposed law, initiated by the home ministry, will replace the Armed Police Battalions Ordinance, 1979, and is being drafted in Bangla.
It will also retain provisions protecting actions taken under the existing ordinance.
Under the proposed law, the APBn will be responsible for maintaining public security and protecting VIPs and government-designated key installations.
Its responsibilities will also include taking action against terrorism, drug trafficking, human trafficking, rape and crimes against humanity, as well as assisting other law enforcement agencies when required.
A key change proposed in the draft is the authority to conduct criminal investigations.
APBn members will be able to investigate criminal offences and carry out related proceedings in accordance with the Code of Criminal Procedure and other applicable laws.
The force will remain under the Bangladesh Police and operate under the control and supervision of an additional inspector general of police.
The draft also provides for special and summary courts and sets out procedures for proceedings before them, creating a specific legal framework for disciplinary and judicial matters involving APBn personnel.
According to the government, the proposed law aims to replace the 1979 ordinance with a legal framework suited to current requirements while clearly defining the APBn's responsibilities, powers and judicial procedures.
