The Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission has sent 17 officials into compulsory retirement.

This is the largest such disciplinary action taken at once since the capital market regulator was established.

In addition, the commission has reduced the salaries of five officials at different levels to the minimum permissible scale.

The decisions were taken at a commission meeting on Tuesday, BSEC sources said.

Earlier, on July 24 this year, the commission issued show-cause notices to the officials, asking why disciplinary action should not be taken against them.

According to BSEC sources, those sent into compulsory retirement include executive director Rezaul Karim, directors Abul Hasan and Mohammad Fakhrul Islam Majumder, additional directors Nazrul Islam and Mollah Md Miraj Us Sunnah, joint director Rashedul Alam, deputy directors Md Nannu Bhuiyan, Qazi Md Al-Islam, Shahidul Islam, Bani Yamin Khan and Touhid Hassan, assistant directors Aminul Haque Khan, Abdul Baten and Sajjad Hossain; and personal officers Abu Yusuf, Kawsar Pasha Barshi and Sameer Ghosh.

On other hand, assistant directors Johnny Hossain, Rayhan Kabir, Tariqul Islam, Maqsud Mila and librarian Salim Reza Bappi have been penalised with salary reduction.

Earlier this year, the stock market regulatory authorities sent director Abu Rayhan Md Mohtashin Billa into compulsory retirement.
