24-Year-Old Man Stabbed to Death at Sherpur Toll Plaza in Sylhet

A 24-year-old man was allegedly stabbed to death at Sherpur Toll Plaza in Osmani Nagar upazila of Sylhet over a previous romantic relationship with a relative, police and family sources said. The victim, Saifur Rahman, was allegedly attacked by Seju Ahmed, the father of his former girlfriend.

The incident occurred at around 11:00 pm on Monday (November 2) at Sherpur Toll Plaza in Sadipur Union of Osmani Nagar. Saifur was the son of Karam Uddin of Syedpur village in the same union.

According to police and family sources, Saifur had been in a long-term romantic relationship with Zara Begum (19), daughter of Seju Ahmed of Mostafapur village in Paschim Pailanpur Union. Seju Ahmed was reportedly a distant relative of Saifur, while Zara was also related to him through extended family ties.

About four months ago, Saifur allegedly eloped with Zara. However, her family strongly opposed the relationship because of their family ties.

Later, following mediation by relatives and members of both families, Zara was returned to her father. The mediators reportedly urged both families to avoid further disputes over the matter. Since then, the two families had reportedly maintained separate lives without any further confrontation.

On Monday night, Saifur received a phone call after dinner and went to Sherpur Toll Plaza. He was sitting and chatting at Afaz Variety Store, owned by local resident Lutfur Rahman.

At one point, Seju Ahmed allegedly arrived and attacked Saifur with a sharp weapon over his previous relationship with Zara. He reportedly sustained multiple stab wounds, and the attacker fled the scene.

After receiving the news, local residents and family members rescued Saifur and rushed him to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, where the attending doctor declared him dead on arrival.

Saifur's brother-in-law, Soraj Mia, said Saifur had been in a relationship with Seju Ahmed's daughter and had eloped with her about four months earlier. Following mediation between the two families, Zara was returned to her father.

He alleged that despite the matter having been settled through mediation, Seju Ahmed attacked Saifur in public at Sherpur Toll Plaza on Monday night and killed him out of previous hostility.
