The government has initiated the Food-Friendly Program by providing subsidized rice to 5.5 million beneficiaries, who will get 30 kilograms of rice per person per month at Tk 15 per kilogram.
The program started from August 1 at 495 upazilas and will last for six months, which means August to November and March to April. It will help in improving food security, stabilizing the market price, and helping poor families.
According to the Ministry of Food, around 24 lakh beneficiaries at 248 upazilas are getting fortified rice, and 29 lakh beneficiaries at 247 upazilas are getting regular rice. In addition to that, rice and flour sales through Open Market Sale (OMS) program are ongoing throughout the nation from 1,108 distribution centers.
As per the ministry, food grain reserves in the country are sufficient and currently total 2.349 million tonnes, as of August 2.
