SC order on MP Sarwar Alamgir deferred till Wednesday

The Appellate Division will deliver its order on Wednesday, July 29, in the ongoing legal dispute surrounding the candidacy of BNP nominee Sarwar Alamgir for the Chattogram-2 constituency.

A four-member bench headed by the Chief Justice fixed the date after hearing the matter on Tuesday.

Although the court was expected to issue its decision following the hearing, it instead reserved the order until Wednesday. The development leaves uncertainty over whether Sarwar Alamgir will be able to take the oath as a member of parliament and participate in parliamentary proceedings.

The dispute stems from an earlier High Court verdict that declared illegal the Election Commission’s decision to uphold Sarwar Alamgir’s candidacy.

Jamaat-e-Islami candidate for the Chattogram-2 seat, Muhammad Nurul Amin, challenged the High Court ruling by filing an appeal before the Appellate Division.

In his petition, Nurul Amin sought a stay on the operation of the High Court judgment and requested the court to bar Sarwar Alamgir from taking the oath as an MP and attending parliamentary sessions until the appeal is finally disposed of.
