Eight people, including women and children, were killed in separate landslides at Rohingya camps in Ukhiya, Cox's Bazar early Monday after heavy rain.
The first landslide struck at around 1:10 a.m. in Block D/6 of Jamtoli Camp No. 15 in Palongkhali Union, burying the shelter of Mohammad Kamal Hossain, 44. Rescuers recovered the bodies of Kamal, his wife Humara Begum, 39, and their son Mohammad Anas, 4.
Ukhiya Fire Service and Civil Defence Station Officer Emon Tripura confirmed the deaths.
"After receiving the information, we started rescue operations at Camp No. 15. During the rescue, we received information about another landslide. Before the fire service arrived, local people rescued victims at Camp No. 11," he said.
At around 1:45 a.m., another landslide killed seven-year-old Shakti Ekram, son of Mohammad Rashid, in Block D/7 of Camp No. 11 in Rajapalong Union. Camp volunteer Enayet Ullah said, "The body of the child was recovered during the rescue operation."
A third landslide hit Block C/11 of Camp No. 11 in Balukhali at around 3:00 a.m., killing four more people. The victims were Umme Habiba, 13, Mohammad Rihan, 5, Harunurad, 3, and another resident.
Ukhiya Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Panna Akhtar said continuous heavy rain had increased the risk of landslides. She said the administration was using loudspeakers to urge people to move to safer places.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department said Cox's Bazar recorded more than 100 millimetres of rainfall in the past 24 hours. Assistant Meteorologist Md. Abdul Hannan said the rain, caused by an active monsoon and a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, is likely to continue for another two days.
