Allegations have been brought against Kaliganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Shamima Akter Jahan of Lalmonirhat for reportedly assaulting a motorcyclist who attempted to purchase fuel using someone else’s fuel card.
After a video of the incident spread on social media, it triggered widespread discussion and criticism in the area. Public anger grew after the video showed a young man being slapped.
The incident took place at Lubana Filling Station at Chaparhat Bazar under Chandrapur Union of the upazila yesterday afternoon.
Eyewitnesses and locals said, the biker, Nodi Chandra Roy, had gone to buy fuel with the card and motorcycle of an ill college teacher, Golok Chandra Roy. Assistant Professor Golok Chandra Roy of Chaparhat College was physically ill and could not go to the pump himself to buy fuel. He handed over his motorcycle and fuel card to local garage owner Pradip Chandra Roy, who gave the fuel card to his employee, Nodi Chandra Roy, and sent him to bring fuel on the motorcycle.
While Nodi Chandra Roy was standing in line at the filling station, UNO Shamima Akter Jahan, who was on duty there, checked the fuel card in his hand. As the face on the card did not match Nodi Chandra Roy’s appearance, the UNO allegedly slapped him several times before hearing any explanation.
At that time, tension spread among other motorcyclists present at the scene. Following protests from locals, the matter was later rechecked. After verifying the authenticity of the motorcycle and fuel card belonging to the ill college teacher, Nodi Chandra Roy was released with the motorcycle after about an hour.
Victim Nodi Chandra Roy said, “I committed no crime. I was beaten without reason and humiliated severely. I want justice.”
Assistant Professor Golok Chandra Roy said, “I never imagined that an innocent person would be beaten and humiliated while trying to bring fuel for my motorcycle. The matter has caused me great pain.”
UNO Shamima Akter Jahan, however, denied the allegation, saying, “I only took the key to his motorcycle. I did not raise my hand on him. Later, the key was handed over to his guardian.”
She made no further comment when asked about the viral video.
Locals have demanded a fair investigation, raising questions about administrative behaviour and alleged abuse of power.
