A Bangladeshi man was shot dead allegedly by India's Border Security Force (BSF) along Dhabolguri border in Patgram upazila of Lalmonirhat early today.
The deceased Bangladeshi was identified as Ali Hossain, 41, hailing from Dhabolguri Purbo Paniartari village in Patgram upazila.
After the incident, BSF has taken Ali Hossain's body to their territory.
The incident took place near sub-pillar No 5 of main border pillar No 874 at Dhabolguri border, about 500 yards inside Indian territory, around 3:00am early today.
Commanding officer of 61 BGB Teesta Battalion, Lt Col Syed Fazle Munim, confirmed the incident.
Quoting phone conversations with the BSF, the BGB official said that seven to eight Bangladeshis crossed the zero-line late at night and entered about 500 yards inside Indian territory. They were attempting to cut the barbed-wire fence in a group. At that time, members of the Satgram camp of India's 156 BSF Battalion, who were on patrol, fired one round of blank shots to disperse the miscreants.
As the miscreants did not disperse, BSF members opened fire on them. A man was shot and fell to the ground on the spot, while the others fled, he said.
Later, BSF members rescued the injured Bangladeshi and took him to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead, Lt Col Fazle Munim added.
The commanding officer said, "We have talked with the BSF. It has been confirmed that one Bangladeshi was killed in the firing. The body is currently at a hospital in India."
Preparations are underway to bring back the body of the Bangladeshi through a flag meeting with the BSF at the border, he said.
