The government has allowed shops and shopping malls across the country to remain open for an additional hour, extending the closing time to 7:00pm from 6:00pm.
State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Anindya Islam Amit announced the decision today while speaking to journalists at his ministry at the Secretariat.
He said the move followed a meeting with traders’ associations and other stakeholders, where shop owners urged the government to extend operating hours to 7:00pm.
“We discussed the matter with the prime minister last night and informed him of the traders’ demand. Following his directive, shops and shopping malls will now close at 7:00pm instead of 6:00pm,” he said.
The earlier directive to close by 6:00pm had been imposed amid concerns over the ongoing energy crisis and came into effect last Friday.
The state minister also said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has instructed authorities to ensure adequate fuel reserves to meet demand for the next three months.
According to him, the country currently has sufficient stocks of octane and petrol to meet demand for the same period.
