Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (WASA) Managing Director Abdus Salam Bepari resigned from his post on Sunday.
He submitted his resignation letter to the Local Government Division of the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives around noon.
The resignation was accepted shortly after it was submitted to the secretary’s office of the ministry, according to officials.
A source at the Local Government Ministry confirmed the development but said the ministry has not yet issued any formal statement on the matter.
A senior WASA official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the ministry summoned Abdus Salam after a recent media report alleged that he had bought a house in Canada for his wife.
“Following the report, the ministry called the managing director and asked him to resign. He later submitted his resignation letter,” the official said.
Abdus Salam had been appointed managing director of Dhaka WASA through a government notification issued by the Local Government Division on November 11 last year.
His appointment came during the final phase of the interim government and had drawn criticism in some quarters.
Before becoming managing director, he served as the additional chief engineer of the state-run utility. During his tenure in that role, he had also faced allegations of corruption, according to reports.
