Water Resources Minister Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee has said there is no opportunity for extortion on roads anywhere in the country, including his home district of Lakshmipur.
He made the remarks while responding to questions from journalists at the Lakshmipur Circuit House on Friday morning, during his three-day official visit to the district.
Anee, also BNP Joint Secretary General, said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has already held a cabinet meeting and placed special emphasis on maintaining law and order across the country.
He added that authorities are also working to ensure stable prices of essential commodities during Ramadan and to continue development activities responsibly across all sectors.
The Minister also highlighted ongoing and planned initiatives to address long-standing waterlogging problems in Lakshmipur. These include proposed dredging of the Bhuluya River and re-excavation of the Rahmatkhali canal. He said feasibility studies are underway to tackle riverbank erosion along the Meghna River and nearby canals.
He further noted that a nationwide canal dredging programme will be launched as part of the government’s 180-day action plan, with Lakshmipur included among the priority areas.
