Police seized around Tk 50 lakh from Thakurgaon district Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Belal Uddin at Saidpur airport in Nilphamari today.
“We have information that he was carrying huge money. We conducted a raid and seized the money. The man told us that there are more than Tk 50 lakh. We are counting the money,” Nilphamari Superintendent of Police (SP) Sheikh Zahidul Islam said.
“He is now in police custody. We will interrogate him about the source of the money and purpose of the use,” he told.
The detention comes a day before the 13th Parliamentary Election and Referendum scheduled for tomorrow, triggering widespread discussion on social media.
Speaking to the police, Belal claimed that he is a college teacher who also runs a garment business, and that the money came from his business.
