The Interim Government on Thursday expressed deep concern over a violent incident in Sherpur that killed a political activist of Jamaat-e-Islami, calling the loss of life unacceptable and deeply regrettable.
With the national election just two weeks away, the government urged all political parties, including the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami, to show responsible leadership and ensure restraint among their supporters. It said violence, intimidation and loss of life have no place in a democratic process.
Police in Sherpur have opened an investigation into the clashes and the killing. Authorities said they will identify those responsible and take them into custody. Law enforcers have also tightened security across the district to prevent further unrest.
The government called on all parties, leaders and campaigners to help maintain peace, uphold the rule of law and engage voters through peaceful and constructive means. It said the country’s future depends on calm, discipline and democratic conduct from all sides.
The Interim Government reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a peaceful, free and fair election.
