Sweets distributed after man beaten to death in Noakhali

A man was beaten to death in public in Kabirhat upazila of Noakhali on Saturday night, with a group of youths later distributing sweets in the local market after branding the victim a robber.

The deceased was identified as Mizanur Rahman alias Roni, 35, son of Md Shahid of Jainadpur area under Kabirhat municipality. He was the father of two children.

The incident took place at around 10pm on the road in front of Kazi Bari near Kalirhat Bazar in Ward No 2 of Narottampur Union of the upazila.

According to police and local sources, a ward-level election meeting of the BNP was underway at Kalirhat Bazar around 8pm when Mizanur arrived and claimed to be a long-time party activist, reportedly triggering an argument between him and party leaders and activists present at the meeting. As tensions escalated, he was chased away from the area.

Later, several individuals allegedly caught him in front of Kazi Bari, north of Kalirhat Bazar, and beat him with sticks and iron pipes, targeting his head and face. He died on the spot, and his body was left on the road.

Police later recovered the body and prepared an inquest report.

A bloodstained stick and an iron pipe were recovered from the scene. A toy pistol and a knife were also recovered from the victim’s pocket.

Police said Mizanur had at least six cases filed against him, including one for robbery, two for theft, an arms case and an allegation of assault on a government employee.

Harunur Rashid Harun, former president of BNP’s Ward No 2 unit in Narottampur Union, said the meeting was taking place at their office when Mizanur arrived and became involved in an altercation. “He later left the place. Afterwards, we heard that someone or others killed him and left the body on the road. I am not aware of any sweets being distributed,” he said.

However, a video showing sweets being distributed after the incident has surfaced.

A local resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, claimed that sweets were shared in the market as Mizanur was allegedly involved in robbery and other criminal activities in the area.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kabirhat Police Station, Md Nizam Uddin Bhuiyan, said police rushed to the spot after receiving information that a suspected robber had been killed in a mob attack. “An inquest has been conducted at the scene. A toy pistol and a knife were recovered from the victim,” he said.

He added that the body would be sent to the morgue of the 250-bed Noakhali General Hospital for autopsy on Sunday morning.

The OC said the victim’s family had not yet lodged a specific complaint. “Legal action will be taken following an investigation into the incident,” he added.
