Speaker Major (retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram has said Sheikh Hasina is unlikely to return in the next 10 years.
“From my political experience, I think there is no chance of Sheikh Hasina’s return in the next 10 years,” he said.
Hafiz Uddin Ahmed made the remarks while answering a question from journalists at Bhola Circuit House on Thursday morning.
The speaker also said the Awami League had created an environment during its rule in which honest, good and neutral people could not take part in elections.
He said major reforms to the election system were needed. People who are not wealthy but are popular and accepted in society should get the opportunity to contest elections.
He said the Election Commission should develop a system that would allow ordinary people to take part in elections.
The Speaker said the upcoming local government elections must be free, fair and neutral.
Elections had not been fair over the past 17 years, but the next local government polls would be held in a free and fair manner, he added.
