A Dhaka court today denied bail to Jamaat-e-Islami leader and former lawmaker Major (retd) Akhteruzzaman in a case filed over allegedly obstructing government duties and misbehaving with officials at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jamshed Alam passed the order after police produced him before the court following a one-day remand.
The case investigation officer, Airport Police Station Sub-Inspector Majedul Islam, sought an order to keep Akhteruzzaman in custody until the investigation is completed. His lawyers, however, sought bail.
Following the hearing, the court rejected the bail petition and ordered that he be sent to jail.
The case was filed following an incident at the airport on Thursday (October 1) over a shortage of luggage trolleys. According to the case statement, Akhteruzzaman allegedly engaged in an argument with the airport’s Executive Director, Group Captain SM Ragib Samad, and threatened him.
The allegations also include misbehaving with and physically assaulting a security staff member after being stopped from recording video in a restricted area, throwing a bottle of Zamzam water and behaving aggressively towards a representative of Biman Bangladesh Airlines.
DB police arrested Akhteruzzaman from his residence in Dhaka’s Cantonment area on Friday (October 2). He was subsequently shown arrested in the airport case and placed on a one-day remand on Saturday.
He was produced before the court today after completion of the remand.
