Person Sentenced to Life Imprisonment in Rape CaseA court in Kushtia has sentenced a 66-year-old man to life imprisonment in a case filed over the rape of a Class VI student in Kumarkhali. The court also fined him Tk 1 lakh, with an additional six months’ imprisonment in case of failure to pay the fine.
The verdict was delivered on Wednesday (September 2) at noon by Judge A H M Shafiqul Islam of the Kushtia District and Sessions Judge Court’s Children Violence Prevention Tribunal. State counsel Advocate Abdul Majid confirmed the matter.
The convicted person, Tahajuddin Mondol, is the son of late Ala Uddin Mondol of Mirpur West Para village under Chandpur Union in Kumarkhali upazila of Kushtia.
According to the case documents, on October 24, 2020, at around 8:00pm, the girl went outside her house to respond to nature’s call. At that time, Tahajuddin allegedly covered her mouth, took her to a nearby bamboo grove and raped her. Hearing her screams, local residents rushed to the spot, but the accused fled. The girl was later rescued by her family members and admitted to a hospital.
Following the incident, the victim’s mother filed a case with Kumarkhali Police Station accusing Tahajuddin Mondol as the sole accused. After completing the investigation, Sub-Inspector Azad Ali of Kumarkhali Police Station submitted the charge sheet to the court on November 30, 2020.
State counsel Advocate Abdul Majid said the court handed down the sentence after finding the allegations against the accused proven beyond reasonable doubt based on witness statements and other evidence presented during the trial.
