Islamabad MoU is only way forward: Pakistan’s deputy PM

Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar has told US Chargé d’Affaires Natalie Baker in Islamabad that “the implementation of the Islamabad MoU … in letter and spirit is the only way forward”, reports Al Jazeera.

In a statement posted on X, Dar, who is also the foreign minister, said that the discussions centred on Pakistan-US bilateral cooperation and recent regional developments.

Dar’s office said he appreciated “the positive trajectory in Pakistan-US relations and underscored the importance of dialogue and diplomacy for lasting peace”.

The statement noted that Baker “appreciated Pakistan’s constructive role in promoting regional peace and stability”.

The Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was an interim peace agreement between the United States and Iran, brokered primarily by Pakistan. It was electronically signed in June 2026 and was intended to halt the U.S.–Iran conflict and create a path toward a comprehensive agreement.

Its 14 main provisions included an immediate end to military operations, respect for each other’s sovereignty, a 60-day period to negotiate a final deal, removal of the U.S. naval blockade, reopening commercial passage through the Strait of Hormuz, planned sanctions relief and release of frozen Iranian assets, and negotiations over Iran’s nuclear programme under IAEA supervision.

The U.S. also committed to working with regional partners on a reconstruction and development package of at least $300 billion for Iran.

Pakistan played the central mediator role after hosting earlier U.S.–Iran talks in Islamabad in April.
