Two people, including a seven-month-old child, were killed and at least 12 others, including a newlywed couple, were injured after a microbus carrying a wedding party crashed into a roadside ditch in Nilphamari early Saturday.
The accident occurred at about dawn in the Shaltibari area on the Kishoreganj-Tenganmari road as the party was returning home with the bride after the wedding ceremony.
The deceased were identified as Jibon Islam, the seven-month-old son of Zikrul Islam of Bandarpara in Kochukata union under Nilphamari Sadar upazila, and Riyad Islam, 20, son of Moja Mia of the same area. Riyad was an HSC examinee.
Police and local residents said a microbus carrying 15 to 16 members of the groom's party travelled to Jugipara in Kishoreganj upazila on Friday night for the wedding.
After the ceremony, the vehicle was returning with the newlywed bride when the driver lost control, causing the microbus to plunge into a roadside ditch in the Shaltibari area.
Jibon Islam and Riyad Islam died on the spot, while at least 12 others were injured.
The injured, including the bride and groom, were admitted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital. Several of them were reported to be in critical condition.
Kishoreganj police station officer-in-charge Abdul Gafur said that the bodies had been handed over to the families after legal formalities.
He said police were investigating the cause of the accident.
